Definitely a misnomer.

We've got three. The ONLY vacation in the proper sense of the word is the one you get when you leave the kids with family and are alone.

Even then your mind (mostly thinking of/worrying about the kids) may not get a respite.

I think you have to plan Grown-up vacations as well. I remember when I was a kid my parents made a point of going away for a weekend for their anniversary every year, even if they could only swing a really simple trip. Time without children. Once darling Jackalope is, um, nutritionally independent of you it will be more feasible, obviously.

Hi - as a mother of 2 girls (now 8 and 11) I can tell you it does get to be more of a vacation as they get older. While he's little, though, it will still be work - there's that whole eating/pooping/sleeping thing that doesn't seem to go away :-).

What helps is if you don't have to do other things such as preparing family meals or cleaning up after the rest of the family. We liked resort vacations vs. beach house for that reason.

Enjoy this time with your little guy - it's precious and goes by so fast!
